Zig Ziglar - Secrets of Closing the Sale

Zig Ziglar is good company and has a wealth of interesting and entertaining stories.  I listened to this book in audio format and once my British ears had got accustomed to Mr Ziglar's rather strong American accent I found myself entertained.  I am not so sure I learned that much.

The trouble with selling is that it really is such a specific skill in terms of time, place and the kind of product being sold.  Ziglar is great on specifics.  He takes you through particular closes that he knows works, and that it is easy to imagine working in the setting he places them in.  So if for instance you want to sell real estate in the US you should probably study closely.

But if you are selling copper tubing to electrical contractors in Norway I have a feeling that there isn't much of value for you in this book.  You'll enjoy it but I don't think it is written in such a way as to allow easy adaptation to different environments.  You'll probably do a lot better working out your own approaches.  In particular the advent of the Internet has changed things enormously.  Even if you turn up in a Mid West farm - which is where a lot of Ziglar's examples come from - you are likely to be dealing with someone who has already out-researched you on the product you are selling online before you walk through the door.

But having warned you that it might not teach you much it is obvious it is still worth a read or a listen to.  The man is a craftsman highly skilled in the art he has chosen.  The details may not be relevant, but it is always good to spend time with people who are are great at what they do.
